Fishing Below Millers Ferry Lock and Dam On Alabama River
My son and I decided to take a fishing trip below the Millers Ferry Lock and Dam and Powerhouse and try out the catfishing. So I decided to put the boat in at Cobbs Landing on Claiborne Reservoir. Here is a post of Cobbs Boat Landing https://comefishalabama.com/cobbs-boat-landing-on-alabama-river/
I am going to give you a little heads up from my experience on 7/21/22. Walk down to the end of ramp and check for mud on the boat landing. Do not I repeat do not launch if the ramp is muddy at the bottom. Well unless you have a four wheel drive vehicle. At this time I suggest boaters launch their boat on the left lane while looking down the boat ramp. As you can see in the picture. Those tire marks are mine. I had to burn some rubber just to get my empty boat trailer out of the Alabama River. After returning to Cobbs Landing at the end of trip, we used the other side and had no problems getting boat out of water with my two wheel drive truck.
Once we launched the boat, we took a beeline to the lower side of Millers Ferry Lock and Dam and decided to throw our jugs out and do some bottom bumping while floating down to the Millers Ferry Powerhouse. This was not productive, all we did up here was chase our jugs being dragged by Alligator Gar and actually lost a jug in the process.
Fishing Millers Ferry Powerhouse
After loosing one of our catfish jugs we decided to go down to the Millers Ferry Powerhouse and throw out our jugs and do some bottom bumping with rod and reels. One thing I recommend while fishing the Millers Ferry Powerhouse. Do not throw your jugs out to close to the powerhouse discharge areas. The fish will drag your jugs into the discharge openings and you will sit there until they start generating power at the powerhouse to get your jugs back. Another lesson learned.
Here is the Millers Ferry Powerhouse schedule http://spatialdata.sam.usace.army.mil/hydropower/default.aspx This is the most important information you will need while fishing below the powerhouse. Well because, when there is current the catfish will start feeding. We threw our jugs out and waited for the catfish to start biting. Once the catfish started biting we were able to catch a mess of Channel and Blue Catfish on the jugs with fresh Drum and Shad cut bait.

While watching the jugs I decided to get my bait caster out and make a few throws down the edge of the rock bank with my Fat Free Fingerling by Bomber Lures. This is when I caught my personal best Alabama Spotted Bass of 4lbs and 3ozs. This beauty latched on and felt like I was pulling on a log. Most fisherman know that Spotted Bass love moving water and this is an ideal spot to catch them with the moving water. Watch the video of my catch below.
All in all this was a good Alabama River fishing trip. We caught catfish and a nice Spotted Bass.
